About St. James

St James is a Catholic Co-educational College, situated at Mary Street, Cygnet, a 40 minute drive from Hobart. As a systemic school administered by the Catholic Education Office we are assisted to provide students with a sound and complete education based on an education in faith.

The College has over 280 pupils from Kindergarden to Year 10.

History of St. James

As early as the 1870's the people of the Cygnet district expressed their strong desire for catholic education of their children and private schools were established to meet this need. In 1896 the Sisters of St. Joseph founded St. Mary's Convent and in 1944 Lourdes Hill Agricultural school was established. In 1972 the Sisters and Brothers sections of the school were combined and the school became co-educational. Shortly after in 1976, St James School and Lourdes Hill Agricultural College became Known as St James College.
